Skins from GForce

On Tuesday 03 April 2012 I received a batch of Washington Redskins cards from a fellow member at TCC who is leaving the hobby for personal spiritual reasons. Gary known as GForce083 on the forums collected Redskins and focused on Jason Campbell especially GUs. He made a tough decision to sell his collection. He says it's been difficult but it is something that he is determined to do. More power to him.
Here is what I purchased from Gary for a grand total of $80. Most of these beauts are for my Redskins PC some of them might eventually find their way to other Redskins team collectors.

This Is What Happens When You Get Traded

Wow talk about getting traded all over the place. Here is a case of a player being traded late in the season to a team that moves to another city the next season but he gets traded to a third team before playing in the new city then before he can play for team number three he gets traded again. I'm talking about this player and his card.

1954 Topps Baseball 19 John "Johnny" Joseph Lipon
1954 Topps Baseball 19 Johnny Lipon Orioles/White Sox
(Front and Back)
It wasn't until I looked at this card closely while I was scanning it when I noticed all the crazy team changing. Looking at this card one can get all sort of confused. ON the front Johnny in the main color portrait is shown in a Red Sox hat and in the small black and white action photo he is wearing an Orioles cap. The card states he is with the Orioles and shows the Orioles Team Logo. Now on the back it says he is with the White Sox. It also mentions that he was traded late "last season" (1953) and played only 7 games with the "Browns". It then goes on to say he was traded to the White Sox in February of 1954. So how does ONE player go to FOUR different teams within one year? Wait I just did some researching and it is even stranger. He never played for the White Sox before playing a single game for them he was traded to the Cincinnati Redlegs (Reds).

So to try to get things straight: John Lipon was playing with the Red Sox when he was traded to the St. Louis Browns in 1963 late in the season. The Browns would move to Baltimore and become the Orioles in 1954, however, Johnny was traded in February of 1954 to The White Sox before playing in Baltimore. The White Sox then traded him to the Cincinnati Redlegs before he even played a game for them. The card doesn't say so, but my research shows he only played one game for Cincinnati then got sent down to the minors where he played a few more years and then started coaching. So as Nick at Dime Boxes would say this is a "Zero-Year" Card. Well sort of he never played for the Orioles but did play for the franchise that moved and became the Orioles, and he never played for the team he is listed with White Sox on the back.

Vintage War and Aviation Cards a pair

Back in March (Tuesday 27 March 2012) I got a bunch of cards mostly baseball some of which I will eventually talk about here, but I thought I'd get these two Non-Sport cards out of the way. I got them from Sportlots for 25¢ plus whatever the shipping was. It was two separate one card auctions from the same seller. The subject of War isn't too fun, but the images of these two cards are pretty cool.

I don't know much about the sets these are from, but this first one is from 1939 so the war had just begun, but not for the US yet where the set was printed. They seem to be pretty rare and auctions at real auction houses usually have full sets going for outrageous prices.

1939 Gum Inc. "World In Arms" 2 British Death-dealing Balloon Barrage
(Front and Back)

This next card is from 1952 well after the war years. It is from the very popular Wings set by Topps. They have the feel of military issued training flash cards, but I don't think they had ever been used as such. The plane featured is the F4U Corsair a plane that I first saw and heard about in the mid 1970s largely in part from the television show Baa Baa Black Sheep later renamed Black Sheep Squadron for syndication starring Robert Conrad as Maj. Greg "Pappy" Boyington who was a real World War II veteran/hero. The show featured other actors who went on to later fame such as John Larroquette (Night Court). The real Pappy Boyington did a walk-on role as a General for the show. The show got a lot of flack because of the way it depicted Boyington's men as misfits and that it was historically inaccurate.

A and G minis from Nick's Dime Box

On Saturday 07 April 2012 as previously mentioned briefly in this post (so this is sort of a repeat/recap), I received a package of 2011 Allen & Ginter Minis from Nick at Dime Boxes. I had sent him about 50 Vladimir Guerrero cards from Vlad's Expos years (a "Vlading" as it were it in reference to "Bipping" except I didn't send multiple duplicates, I think I only sent one dupe) and in the brotherly Trading Card Universe way he returned in kind, minus the Bipping er Vlad-ing by sending me 20 A&G Minis. I'll repeat the list of goodies and then highlight a few of them front and back.

Regular backs
27 Dillon Gee Mets
51 Jimmy Rollins Phillies
36 Eric Sogard A's
88 David Ortiz Red Sox
184 Pedro Alvarez Pirates
190 Sue Bird "Champion Women's Basketball Guard" WNBA Seattle Storm
195 Tommy Hanson Braves
201 Andrew Romine Angels
236 B.J. Upton Rays
259 Tim Hudson Braves
302 John Buck Marlins
322 Trevor Cahill A's
349 Yuniesky Betancourt Brewers

A&G Backs
44 Ozzie Martinez Marlins
113 Miguel Montero Diamondbacks
117 Jonathan Sanchez Giants
132 Colby Rasmus Cardinals
222 James Shields Rays
224 Jason Kubel Twins
288 Rickie Weeks Brewers

All except one of these cards were of baseball players it is still a sports card not one of the Non-Sports cards. It is Sue Bird of the WNBA team Seattle Storm and according to the title on her card "Champion Women's Basketball Guard". I don't know much about women's basketball I've rarely watched even a few minutes of it as I'm not much into basketball but I'd rather see 10 women running back and forth on a wooden floor than 10 sweaty giant men.

2011 Allen & Ginter's Mini 190 Sue Bird WNBA Seattle Storm

(Front and Back)

This next card I thought it was weird that a baseball player was carrying a football helmet. I didn't think about the fact that it could be and is his catcher's mask/helmet. D'uh.

2011 Allen & Ginter's Mini 302 John Buck Marlins
(Front and Back)

Now here is one one of the 7 A&G backs from this batch. I chose it because I wanted to at least show one of the A&G backs.

Texas Bikini Team 1995 Edition

This is my second attempt at this post the first one the automatic html was acting weird and I deleted a formatting line resulting in text getting printed over anything that followed it in the post so that the image that followed the text had text overtop of the image. UGH. I hate that you can't go back and reinsert something you just deleted while working within the post creating section. Anyway enough of my technology impairments. You just wanna see necked women, well not quite necked this is a PG Rated Blog.

On Monday 02 April 2012 I got several packages from various sources one was an Ebay auction for a small set of 9 cards. I got the set for $12.69 + 86¢ I went into a little detail about the auction with a brief description of the set (actually it was briefer than the bikinis that are shown) in my Maildays 01-07 April post. Now onto the set:

Texas Bikini Team 1995 Edition
Intro Set by Image 2000

This little Nine card set was released in 1995 by Image 2000 is titled as an "Intro Set", I'm not sure but I think this is the only set that was made of this potential series. As you can see the set contains 1 title card and 8 cards with bikini models on them.

The card set is designed to be placed in a 9 pocket binder sleeve page in numerical order, because as you see all the backs have puzzle pieces that make up a nine card image (The model shown is Hope from card number 3).

Card Puzzle Backs:
Top Row: 3, 2, 1 Middle Row: 6, 5, 4 Bottom Row: 9, 8, 7

The backs of the cards don't quite align up if you place them flush against each other, they are cut to allow a tiny border space for placing and displaying in a binder as I said above. If they were framed and mounted with perfect alignment the image would look like you are viewing Ms. Hope through a window. My scan of the backs isn't perfect but its close maybe I should have tried scanning it in a binder page.

Now onto the individual cards. The cards are numbered with an "I-" preceding the card number (except for card number 5 the title card and middle puzzle piece card) the "I" being for "Intro" or maybe "Inaugural" but more likely "Intro". The numbers are in the white corner of a red, white and blue Texas shaped logo with the model's name in white at the bottom of the logo. All these Midwest Ladies are modeling the same red, white and blue bikini honoring the Texas State Flag. There are 8 models and 5 are wearing a single gun holster accessory, 2 of them are holding the gun, 1 is holding a coil of rope, 3 are wearing white cowboy hats, 3 have a cape/jacket/blanket wrapped draped on them and 1 is shown wearing white cowboy boots I'm guessing all of them are actually wearing the boots but you can't see most of them below their knees.

Watts in a Name? Football Glass

Every once in a while I run across a name that strikes me as being funny, ironic or sometimes unfortunate. From time to time I will try to show some of the cards I have with these names that stand out.

This first card I'll mention I got first because of the name and second because I need to complete this particular set that I am leagues away from completing. I got this card from Ebay for 99¢ + $3.00 shipping

CHIP GLASS
1973 Topps Football - 203 Chip Glass RC Browns
(Front and Back)

This is Chip's Rookie Card, and apparently his only card. Guess Topps doesn't like to pick up broken glass off the floor? Chip made his NFL Debut in 1969 playing for the Cleveland Browns he was traded to the New York Giants in 1974 his last season. According to the back of his card he makes spectacular catches and in 1970 caught a 78 yarder vs. The Houston Oilers.  At the time it was the Browns longest pass. The cartoon is interesting in that it is totally unrelated to the player featured or his team. That is typical for Topps it seems. It has a trivia question about which stadium the New Orleans Saints play in A: The Sugar Bowl. The Superdome was under construction as it opened 2 years later in 1975.

Mr. Glass reminds me of commedian/actor Bruce Mahler who is best known for being in the Police Academy Movies as Sgt. Doug Fackler.
Bruce Mahler as Sgt. Doug Fackler in Police Acedemy 2: Their First Assignment 1985 Warner Bros.

I remember Bruce from the sketch comedy show Fridays, which was ABCs attempt at a Saturday Night Live. It only lasted 3 seasons from 1980-1982, I thought it barely lasted one.

Edit: Yes I borrowed this idea from another blog. That one when they do make funny name posts I think they concentrate on the more unfortunate ones

Mailday Saturday 14 April 2012

Mailday Catch-up. NO Scans yet. Lets see got an Ebay order in (actually it was 3 separate ones but all the same seller) and technically it came earlier in the week with the orange pick-up slip I got The 132 card Update sets for:
1987 Topps
1989 Fleer
1990 Topps

Plus got a box of 1980s - 2012 mixed lot cards from a member over at the Sports Card Forum. I paid $13. There were about 250 (I counted 249) cards. Shipping for the box was $5.35 so that was $7.65 for an unsorted lot of commons. Actually they were pretty good it was a nice mix. Only one card had some damage its top left corner was torn, the rest were NMT as one would expect. There is some trade fodder in there, some will end up being PC.

Playing Mailday Catchup: Next update in 1 hour.

Mailday Wednesday 11 April 2012

Playing catch-up with my maildays. No scans right now. Later when I mention this Team Set.
Got two Ebay packages. Still waiting on a sportlots package that was paid for back on 22 March (all but this one package has arrived, I think the guy might be from Canada and he may have taken time to fill/ship the order, hence the delay) Anyway chronologically I got:

Mailday Monday 09 April 2012

Since Monday's Mailday was a pretty big one I'll have to do it on it's own. I will try to post some pictures of stuff later when I mention them specifically, or their sets next time. I am just all kinds of backed up on what I "want" to scan. I keep on thinking of stuff I need to scan, plus over at the TCC forums I was involved in a contest that involved me having to scan something new everyday unless I already had it scanned. So I am even further way back than I was before. At least I came in third! (No prize for 3rd though) Anyway here is the huge list of what I got on Monday (Tuesday there was no card related stuff although I had one of those "you have a package" orange slips which should be some late 80s early 90s Update Sets.

So big a mix of Ebay and Sportlots it is hard to keep track of which was which after putting cards in proper order. It was all Baseball except one Non-Sports Item I got and the seller included some extras.

Maildays 01 - 07 April

MAILDAYS
01 - 07 April 2012
(Weekly Round UP)

I'm not sure how long I'll be able to keep up with this sort of thing or if I'll be able to manage it as I am planning on managing it. Anyway I already somewhat track my card "maildays" over at my TCC Blog. When I had time and wanted to be fancy I would add pictures there but I haven't done that for a long time. On this blog I think I will do the same sort of simultaneous tracking. Only on here it will be a weekly post and I'll try to add more pictures. I don't add pictures much on the forum blog anymore. Depending on the size of the maildays I might have to have the occasional one day additional posting or maybe one day postings only. Well the future tells that tale.

2009 Monsters vs. Aliens 8 card ComicCon promo set base on the movie sealed (will unseal to see cards but scan while sealed to show how it came) got it for $4.99 + $3 shipping. I will blog about this set soon.

Next an item that started with an opening bid of $1.00. I think I got shilled $1 dollar under my max. there was one other bidder who bid in sort increments during the last minute. I could have been a snipe attempt it is hard to tell the difference now-days on "The Bay". There were a total of 4 bids. That is one of the things I hate about bidding a day or two early, but sometimes it's necessary for me to get a chance to win (I can't always monitor when auctions end). I ended up paying $12.69 + 86¢ shipping. I saw one set of this selling for an outrageous price of $66.99 for this very same 9 card set:

Image 2000 Texas Bikini Team Intro set: 1995 Edition 9 card set, backs make up a puzzle. Yeah definitely need a post about this set in all it's glory.

SATURDAY 07 APRIL

Got a sportlots order of the 2012 Topps Opening Day set of 220 cards. Number 220 Carlos Lee Astros has no number on it. I think this is an UER. I noticed other people have been questioning this and it seems every card on Ebay is unnumbered. I got the set for 25¢ + 17.00 shipping. Yeah that sucks it only cost the seller $5.10 to send in a thin bubble mailer (that got a little torn in my apt mailbox which is the one the delivery person opens up the whole bank of boxes from) the set itself was safe in a small 400ct card box.

Also included were some "Diamond Giveaway" Code cards. even if I wanted to use the codes they expired 31 Jan 2012. They might be fun to collect as novelty cards the ones I got are numbers: TDG 3, 4, 15, 17, 22, 23, 24, 27

Then from blogger Nick at Dime Boxes (who I had sent some Vladimir Guerrero cards) I got some nice A&G minis from 2011 Allen & Ginter all but one of them are baseball players the non baseball player is a women's basketball player:
