With a less than 11 months (about 10) to go in my quest to Strive for '65 set build I have completed another small hurdle one of many such small feats - The subset of checklists complete with the known printing variations. Back in the 1960s and even up until the very early 1970s Topps released the card sets in series during the season, now-days they release the full set at the beginning of the season or before and then at the end of the season release an update set. OH wait now they release a dozen sets every other month during the entire year confusing the heck out of everyone. The big bonus I got is I somehow managed to get all of the checklists UNMARKED.
1965 Topps Baseball 1st Series Checklist 79 A & B Front (B on left A on right)
1965 Topps Baseball 1st Series Checklist 79 A & B Back (A on left B on right)
1965 Topps Baseball 7th Series Checklist 508 A & B Front
(Large font version A on left Small font version B on right)
1965 Topps Baseball 7th Series Checklist 508 A & B Back
(Version B on left Version A on right)
*I do have one duplicate each of 3rd Series 189 almost fully marked front and back, 4the Series 273 Unmarked (got the duplicate when I got 4 of the checklists at once replacing the marked versions) and 5th Series 361 marked on back.
I've toyed with the idea of checklist sets. Thats a nice 1965 set.
ReplyDelete...But if the checklists are unmarked, then how will you know which cards some kid had 49 years ago?
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice milestone, congratulations!
Checklists and team cards, especially the team cards with pitching win totals on the back, always fascinated me. Nice job on these.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I ever would have noticed those variations.
ReplyDeleteNormally I wouldn't have noticed either, In the old days before price-guides it would have required having duplicates and noticing something odd about one of them. Then in the late 70s early 80s it would require checking an out-of-date price guide. Now-days you can check on online checklist to see if they have any notes about variants.. When I was doing my initial checklist of what I needed for my 1 year goal, most of the online checklists I looked at mention the first one (the #79 with the extra "C"). For some sets I don't bother with those variations, but this is one of those special sets that I wanted to have the "Master" set.
DeleteMultiple versions of vintage checklists seems a bit cruel to collectors seeing as how so many checklists were actually marked up...you know, actually used as checklists back in the day!
ReplyDeleteChecklists are very underrated. Can also be very expensive
ReplyDeletelooks like you need a checklist for your checklists!!
