Continuing Set Build 1974: Expos O's and Team Cards Sub-Sets

UPdated: 24 April 2015: Finished Expos and Orioles teams.

It's been over 40 years in the making and it is still "in progress", like 99% of all my set "builds" from my childhood. One of my all-time fave Baseball sets is 1974 Topps. I have made one step more toward finishing that 660 card set. Well actually there are something like 678 including some error correction variations. Maybe I'd have better luck building the O-Pee-Chee set?

The little steps that will help fill in the complete set. I have slowly been working toward and with some orders from sportlots in an effort to complete some of those little steps in the form of team sets.

So now I have an almost complete Expos team set: 29/29 (30/30 w/Team Checklist) Dang 4 player rookie cards.

With Card #599 I think I have the small print version of the Padres variation, I'm not 100% sure as it is hard to tell sometimes the difference between large and small fonts on these weird variations.

Team Cards set: 24/24 (25/25 w/Wash)

When I finally COMPLETE these teams I think I will show them off. Til then I am just showing the samples from above. While scanning the cards for this post I noticed some previously unseen or forgotten paper loss damage to my Brooksie card back:

EEK!
Not only is there enough loss that you can't read his first few HR and RBI stats but the top of AVG column top is hanging on to dear life.

Over all for the complete set I am at 61% almost 62% complete.

Repack Dollar Tree Style: Pack Two of Two

Last post was Pack One of my Two pack Dollar Tree repack adventure so lets get into the goodies right away.

Pack Two Full Contents group pic

Opened Pack 2 after midnight on 08/09 Feb 2014:
Pack Two: 1981 Topps 1980 Runs Batted In Leaders showing on top. (Back card is a 1987 Topps Kirby Puckett)
No noticeable dings (unlike the other pack)

Here are the few selected cards group shot:
Dollar Tree CardsOne 30 card repack two selectred cards group
(Front and Back)

Cards as Picked (27 Cards Total)
1981 Topps 3 - 1980 Runs Batted In Leaders: Cecil Cooper Brewers and Mike Schmidt Phillies
1994 Pinacle 355 Ken Hill Expos
1992 Fleer 10 Sam Horn Orioles
1988 Topps 408 Dion James Braves
1996 Topps 318 Greg Maddox Braves
1994 Fleer Flair 60 Wally Joyner Royals
1988 Topps 395 Jimmy Key AS Blue Jays
1988 Topps 300 Don Mattingly Yankees
1995 Topps Stadium Club 185 Craig Biggio Astros
1987 Topps 489 Bill Gullickson Reds
1996 Pacific Collection 22 Kevin Foster Cubs
1995 Score 314 John Valentin Season Highlights Red Sox
1994 Select 255 Terry Mulholland Yankees
1994 Select 223 Dean Palmer Rangers
1994 Select Baseball 223 Dean Palmer Rangers
(Front and Back)
OK so this pack features two 1994 Select cards one right after the other. At first I thought the design was so-so with the players last name vertical and so large but after studying it some it isn't too bad. **Sigh** looks like another junk years set to try to build.

1987 Topps 195 Mike Pagliarulo Yankees
1996 Topps 263 Vince Coleman Mariners
1996 Topps Baseball 263 Vince Coleman Mariners
(Front and Back)
Normally I wouldn't pick this card to show, but for this pack it was the card that was duplicated in the pack (about four cards from now). It's one of Topps mid 1990s sets I'm so-so on.

1988 Topps 9 Andy Hawkins Padres
1988 Topps 744 Whitey Herzog Cardinals
1988 Topps 49 Dave Clark Indians
1996 Topps 263 Vince Coleman Mariners (Yeah here is the dupe I told you about)
1988 Topps 301 Bud Black Royals
1988 Topps 576 Tommy Hinzo Indians
1993 Fleer Flair 271 Erik Hanson Mariners
1994 Fleer Flair 252 Mike Devereaux Orioles
1994 Fleer Flair Baseball 252 Mike Devereaux Orioles
(Front and Back)
One of those sets from Fleer that I am not sure if I like or not. I like most of the Flair sets but some of those two picture fronts are just too freaky. Flair was Fleer's high end product it seems.

1991 Topps Stadium Club 571 Tommy Gregg Braves
1987 Topps 398 Brad Havens Orioles
1987 Topps 450 Kirby Puckett Twins
1987 Topps Baseball 450 Kirby Puckett Twins
(Front and Back)
Way to end the pack with a power packed super star.

So this pack only had 27 cards 3 less than advertised combined with the other pack I just evened out. The year range in this pack 1981 to 1996 with most late 80s to mid 90s.

Introducing Curly W Cards my other Card Blog

My Curly W Cards Blog

Just a little self promotion here. Over the past week plus a few days over, I have been working on and kicked off another card blog. I had posted up a page here (static page linked on the right sidebar not a regular main page post) Originally called "Thinking about a new Card Blog" but when I launched the blog I changed it to "Curly W Cards Blog News" (Now Curly W Cards Blog Update) in an effort to start getting visitors. The page here gives a brief tale of how I decided to start it up.The blog is Washington Baseball Specific. I plan on covering the whole spectrum of cards from the various Washington DC baseball teams focusing on the Senators and the Current Nationals. Even though technically the "Curly W" the Nationals have been using was developed in 1963. Previous Washington teams used a straight laced W that was usually narrow since the "Curly" version wasn't around yet. I'll talk about those older cards dispite the fact they pre-date the more modern logo. The nature of the beast will also have me mentioning the Montreal Expos often and probably the Texas Rangers and Minnesota Twins. So occasionally I'll show cards that on the surface don't have anything to do with baseball in DC. [Think "6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon" only with Washington Baseball cards]

Off on a semi-related tangent thought. I don't have any cards from the Negro Leagues neither vintage nor modern commemorative so I probably won't mention the Homestead Grays too often. (Unless I get blessed with packages of them from interested readers - If and when I get readers. There is a nice 1994 Ted Williams baseball card set that includes a few.) Time to get back on track.

So far I have only posted an introduction post at CWC. I am in the process of developing 2 or 3 posts that concentrate on just one player per post. I figure that will be part of my SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) for the blog. Each player post will feature a few cards from that player, unless I only have one card of them. The first post I'm working on probably won't be a homer but could possibly be a ground rule double or a triple maybe. I almost had it ready to post but then I decided I should scan the backs of the cards I showed so I can mention the backs as well, unless they are blank. I still need to do that scanning.

I have a couple of static pages on a top tab list one is a repeat of the "Introduction/Welcome" post that will serve as an introduction to the blog. The other is an attempt to list all the Washington Baseball cards I currently own. (Oy what a task). That one is called "My Curly W Checklist". On it I will list each card from each Washington player I have, even their cards from when they were on other teams (finding some of those in my collection is challenging since my collection is not well organized and quite big). The list is in chronological order by card set/series. UGH I just thought maybe I should have made the list alphabetical, but then I get the problem of what to do with multiple player cards and the team cards would have to be either at the beginning of the list or the end they would get lost in a list if they were in the "Ws" (or "Ns" or "Ss") The team cards and other miscellaneous cards would have to be chrological anyway so why not?

I am also working on a player list of the guys I "Super Collect" (Some I "super" collect more than others). Maybe I should incorporate some sort of checklist there or link them to a list. The Herculean task I am attempting is to make a full All-Time Roster. I had noticed that any ATRs on the web are "franchise specific" so they include all the current players on a team like the Rangers or Twins and those players during the "Non-Existent" years who never put on a Washington Uniform or played in DC so why list those guys. Even though I do collect guys like Gary Carter (Expos) and Vladimir Guerrero (Expos, currently on Orioles)

At times I think I bit off more than I can chew or even close my mouth, but it has been fun developing it, I only wish my collection was better organized.Wow I was originally just going to mention the blog and link to it, or make a "link this" link to the welcome entry. So enjoy.

Stand-Ups 2003 Looks like 1964

Got this 2003 Topps Bazooka Stand-Up card (based on the 1964 Topps Stand-Ups) for a steal from sportlots for 25¢ plus shipping 95¢ Considering the player it is a super steal.

2003 Bazooka Stand-Up 9 Alex Rodriguez - Rangers

I do want to collect this set of 25 cards, plus probably the set of 4 red versions. I am also looking for the original 1964s in decent shape, preferably complete even if it was "folded".

2004 Upper Deck Power UP Baseball 9 pack

A while Back  (WOW back on 20 May) I had gotten some packs of cards from Target that I mentioned in this post Target Fairfield Value Pack Box This package consisted of 4 packs of baseball cards, 100 random baseball cards and a bonus of an additional pack of cards. I already mentioned the cards I got, but I decided I would show some of them. The few from the packs anyway, the 100 card deck I might only show a few choice ones. I haven't decided on that yet. I like getting these boxes/packages from time to time but I had forgotten that they "super" glue (it's not really the super-glue brand but the glue is really tough) the packs on the box supporting cardboard, making it nearly impossible to pull the packs off totally intact for those collectors who like to keep the pack wrappers.

2004 Upper Deck Power Up Baseball
(9 card pack)

This interesting series I didn't see until a couple of years ago when I got some Orioles cards from a trade or a box break, or team traders group. I got the Jay Gibbons card, and it seems I keep getting this card. I have at least 4 maybe 5 of this card now. Anyway these Power Up cards are part of some kind of online contest or game each card has a code on it and each card has some points that you get while playing this game or entering the contest. The player's heads are big out-of-proportion like the old Goudey "Heads Up" cards At first I thought these cards were stupid, but the big head caricatures of the players are fun. I'm not sure about the lime green color theme though.

The backs have a disembodied headshot and a few personal stats, plus points for the game, contest whatever the thing is. The font used for the card number and the player's name is too unusual. The numbers are sometimes a little hard to figure out, it took me some studying to figure out the 3 (was it a "3" or an "8"?) The chrome Shinning Through insert card(s) give more points and the backs look more like a standard card with the player's stats.

2007 Goudey Baseball 8 pack

A while Back  (WOW back on 20 May) I had gotten some packs of cards from Target that I mentioned in this post Target Fairfield Value Pack Box This package consisted of 4 packs of baseball cards, 100 random baseball cards and a bonus of an additional pack of cards. I already mentioned the cards I got, but I decided I would show some of them. The few from the packs anyway, the 100 card deck I might only show a few choice ones. I haven't decided on that yet. 2007 Goudey Baseball pack break contents

2007 Goudey: I really like these retro vintage cards. Mostly since I'm a huge fan of vintage stuff. I have always liked the Goudey cards, but I don't think I have any original Goudey vintage, partly because when I was a kid they were too expensive at the time. As an adult they are not too expensive for me, well some of the common ones maybe. When these retro cards first hit the market I saw them but didn't get any because the hobby boxes were too expensive and at the time (and I think even the packs seemed a bit expensive at the time) I didn't want to get into the pack busting of these since I knew I'd have to get a bunch everytime I wanted to bust packs. These cards follow the original design and format idea the cards are smaller than the standard modern size of 2.5" by 3.5".

The card backs have either red or green printing. I think they printed an equal amount of each back, not 100% sure on that though sometimes card manufacturers like to make a short print of one of the styles just to tick off collectors who want to go for a complete set.
