Happy Birthday Number Nine!

23 August 2013:
It is NFL Hall of Famer Sonny Jurgensen's 79th birthday. Happy Birthday Sonny! Here is what was on Facebook this morning on the Redskins Page:
image from Redskins page at Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/redskins
Another birthday mention is on the blog "Can't Have Too Many Cards" with some cool Sonny pics, some of which I hadn't seen before.

Sonny J. is one of my All-Time favorite QBs if not my favorite. He is best remembered as a Redskin, but he started his NFL career in Philadelphia with the Eagles.

In 1964 Sonny was traded to the Skins in a trade that involved QB Norm Snead. That meant that a few of his late 1960s trading cards even though they were labeled as him being on the Skins, used  an old photo of him in his green Eagles jersey.

A couple of my fave Sonny cards I have scanned. There are a few more in my Sonny PC but I don't have them scanned or at least don't have the scanned images online anywhere yet.

OK this last pic is not a card but it is cool memorabilia. In 1971 (and '72) The Mattel Toy company made little battery operated "toy" record players with 2.5" discs of the popular sports figures of the day. Called Instant Replay I got this Sonny Jurgensen one off of Ebay for $6.99 + $2.00 shipping.

Happy BirthdayGood old number Nine, I'm not sure why the Redskins have not retired his number yet. They should before some hotshot kid claims it and has a terrible career while wearing it, or someone from another team that wears the number like Mr. Romo gets traded to the Skins. Oh I did a quick Google and technically not retired, The Redskins have a sort of non-retirement policy, his number along with several other Redskins legends like John Riggins are "Unofficially" retired.

NCIS Promo NSU

I have so many things that I want to blog about but have not gotten around to scanning or I had gotten so long ago I don't remember where I got them or how much I paid for them. So sometimes I won't bother with all that. This item is something I got recently enough that I could still find it in my card forum blog entries without any problems. Now the details for this are as follows: From Ebay I got a fresh unopened copy of Non-Sport Update Magazine Vol 23 No 3 with NCIS Cast on cover for $5.99 + $2.75 shipping it was sealed with the following promo cards:
2012 Rittenhouse NCIS P2
2012 Cryptozoic The Walking Dead P2
2012 Cryptozoic Fringe P1
2012 Rittenhouse Game of Thrones Season One P2

Obviously from the cover I got this issue for the NCIS info since I'm a huge fan of that show. For those not familiar with the magazine it is a bi-monthly (meaning it comes out every other month so only 6 issues a year). It gives the latest info on upcoming Non-Sport Card releases and also includes a semi current price guide. Each issue also has a handful of promo cards, usually four.

Of the other three promo cards, two of them I am going to either trade or sell because I'm not interested in those card sets or the series they are based on. Those two are The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones Season One (I also have the NSU P2 promo card of Game of Thrones Season Two). I am undecided on the Fringe card I think I'll keep that one. I'm not sure which hoarding stack that card is in right now anyway.

As for NCIS well there are three other promo cards for that series  as well as the base cards which cover the first 72 episodes of the series or the first three seasons. I also plan on getting the Autograph cards from the series as well. Those who are familiar with the show know that it is a spin-off of the series J.A.G. (Judge Advocate General) I have the base card set for that one, but need to search for the Autos and any fun inserts. I need to research that set again and blog about the base set sometime. Just one of many many things to blog about eventually.

The NCIS series is made by Rittenhouse, which is the top player in Non-Sport cards now-a-days.

Washington Wednesday: All Gibbs All Day All The Way

ALL GIBBS ALL DAY ALL THE WAY!
OK, OK, its been a very very long time between these things. I really should do them more often, and yeah don't get me started on my Mascot Monday feature. Its been over four months for that one, but as the kids used to say "What Ever!" (with the eye rolling).

So in my "daily" (not really but sometimes seems like it) overspending on Ebay I picked up an auction lot of four cards, I was going to say "set" but lot is more accurate. It was an actual auction that I bid on near the ending time, not my usual BIN "Buy It Now" spending spree. I had no problem or competition for it. Plus the seller was a fairly new seller only 1 feedback at the time, now they have 3 or 4. The pricing was $4.99 + $1.81 shipping, and surprisingly came in the proper bubble mailer packaging. Each card was in its own toplaoder and penny sleeve.

The cards were all of one person one team: Joe Gibbs Coach Washington Redskins. There was a duplicate so even though there are physically four cards there are only three designs. I already had three of the four cards, or rather two of the three, which makes the duplicate a triplicate at least. Well Homie Team and multiple copies of individual cards, and all that. "What Ever!"
The Cards:
1989 Pro Set Football 440 Joe Gibbs Redskins Coach (2) Had it

1990 Pro Set Football 333 Joe Gibbs Redskins Coach Had it
1992 Pro Line Profiles Football 127 Joe Gibbs Redskins Coach needed it
The Pro-Line card is card number 127 but is also marked "1 of 9" meaning it is card number 1 of a 9 card subset, not a serial numbered "card number one of only nine total cards made" (1/9) like they do now days, so there could be 10,000 of these 1 of 9 1992 Pro Line Joe Gibbs cards. It seems that set is composed of nine card sub-sets for each player/coach featured.

Two From Leena

In my quest to build my Rittenhouse Warehouse 13 collection, I have recently acquired a couple (read only 2) of the tons of autograph cards needed, both by the same actor. Both I got from Ebay auctions the first one I got (the newer one) took 2 bids it started at about $5bucks but ended up costing me $10.50 the other I got for the opening bid of $9.00 because I bid on it closer to the ending time. The actor in this case is the lovely Genelle Williams who played Leena the original bed and breakfast owner in the series. As far as I know they never gave Leena a last name. She had the psychic ability to read people's auras and helped manage the inventory in the Warehouse.

Both cards have the same black border autograph design but have a different photo of Genelle. The backs are nearly identical only the copyright date IDs which set the card is from. Things could get more confusing as the Season 2 set was released in 2011 but the card is dated 2010.

The Season 2 card actually cost the seller $5.60 to ship. It was well packaged not one of those cheesy PWE jobs. It was in one of those document sized priority mail envelopes as the outside envelope then a medium media mailing envelope like the old film development envelopes, then sandwiched between two pieces of card board then an invitation type envelope and finally in the "bonus" pack = the original serial numbered 6 card pack it came from (or one similar if not the exact one)

The cards:
2011 Rittenhouse Warehouse 13 Season 2: Autograph Card NNO - Genelle Williams as Leena
on card blue sharpie $9.00 + $3.00 Shipping

2013 Rittenhouse Warehouse 13 Season 4: Autograph Card NNO - Genelle Williams as Leena
on card blue sharpie $10.50 + $2.69 Shipping.
The Pack: An unexpected bonus, I had forgotten that the auction description said the pack would be included. None of the other cards that came in it were included just the one Autograph card.

Warehouse 13 Cards NOTE: The autograph cards only have 2 different styles of design. There is the black border style and the Farnsworth (the video communications device from the series) style. Some actors seem to have an auto on each design, for each season, others seem to have 2 on one design with a different photo. It maybe confusing for me to know what I really have of them then. Also the limited numbers of all the different types of cards make it very difficult for me to get these cards let alone get them for a decent price.

I am a bit annoyed at Rittenhouse for making so few of the base cards for the later seasons, not only in the number of cards in the sets only 26, but also in the limited numbers they made them in only about 250? Serial Numbered? OK so it seems the packs were serial numbered? Very strange very limited way to do things. This super short printing of stuff is really ticking me off about this hobby that I have been a part of most of my life.

A Kirk Of A Different Color

In recent years I really haven't been too big on Chrome cards and even less thrilled about the Refractors which are Chrome cards on steroids. Back in the 1980s or late 1970s when the companies were experimenting with Chrome and Hologram cards I thought they were pretty cool, that was until they started overdoing them like everything else in the "Junk Wax Years". I do have a thing for parallel cards and variants. These days it seems the card companies are cranking out more parallels that are only slightly parallel rather than true variants, and very little base. Sometimes it is hard to tell what exactly is different. OH the background is light tan instead of light gray, Ah his name is in silver leaf instead of gold leaf, took me 10 minutes to figure that one out.

Well I saw a parallel chrome refractor on auction at sportlots.com that was a beaut. Fortunately it is even more of a beaut in real-life.

Here are the details: As I said, and as you can see by the logo at the top of this post, I got it from sportlots.com via their 1...2...3...Auctions. I got it for the opening .25¢ bid + $1.95 shipping. The shipping charges were about right for how it was sent. Not like those slime balls who charge $3.00+ for shipping and then send in a PWE with only a stupid "card saver" to supposedly protect the card. This one was in a medium sized, medium cardboard stock envelope/packet about the size of a medium wedding invitation or birthday card. The card appropriately in a penny sleeve in toploader. The order/packing slip was wrapped around the card. The card is 2012 Bowman Baseball Chrome 24 Kirk Nieuwenhuis RC Mets Purple Parallel #045/199. As I said sweet very sweet looking. Here take a gander at it.

2012 Bowman Chrome 24 Kirk Nieuwenhuis RC Mets Purple Parallel #045/199
(Front and Back)

I guess I probably should get the flagship Bowman base and the base Chrome of this card, maybe go for a master rainbow of it. I am warming up a little to chrome and refractors, even a little to the Game Used cards. I still hate the game used and artifact cards concept of cutting up memorabilia into tiny little inch squares, but am starting to appreciate them a little more than I once did.

RAC: RAC Card Tracking

Random Acts Of Cardness Card Tracking:
 (Newest entry first)

Monday 23 December 2013: Jeff of 2x3 Heroes received the RAC card via Jim (GCRL) sounds like it was a drive by, I mean in person pass off. As the year is winding down there might be one more pass off not sure since the year end holidays are upon us.

Friday 13 December, 2013:
Just got an email from Jim at gcrl saying he had received the card via Nick's Dime Box. Man I so wish I had started this thing closer to the beginning of the year, things seem to be picking up steam.

Thursday 21 November, 2013:
The RAC Card has returned from visiting Ana on it's Vacation in Portugal (I hope it took some cool pictures) and is back in the U.S., back in the U.S., back in the U.S...A. with Nick from Dime Boxes. It has a little over a month before heading home.

Thursday 07 November, 2013:
WooWhoo! The RAC Card seems to be taking a winter holiday in Europe. I got an email from Ana Lu of the Hobby Cards Europe blog. She lives in Lisbon, Portugal the RAC Card made its way to her via Commishbob. Thank you Ana for the update and thank you Bob for paying it forward overseas.

Monday 05 August, 2013:
Finally I got this into the mail this past Saturday (03 August 2013) heading to the winner of my RAC2 Contest Commishbob. Yes I was procrastinating some, I procrastinate in just about everything dealing with cards for some unknown reason. I sent him some cards that he should be receiving/has received today according to USPS Package Tracking Service (was "Delivery Confirmation"). There was nothing too spectacular some vintage and some newer Orioles cards. Hopefully there are at least one or two cards he didn't already have. Hopefully he can Pay Forward the RAC Card to someone soon, and I'll hear from that person about the card status.

I originally thought I would be on top of things and have almost a year for this "Pay It Forward" RAC Card experiment, but with all my dilly and dallying it will only be a little more than 4 months.Hopefully those who receive the card will follow the instructions and keep me updated when they receive the card, and it will be returned to me sometime in January. I'm not expecting to have any cards come with it, but who knows there might be some.

I will keep track of where the card has been. The only mention of "who" has it will be int my updates above. If given the sending dates I'll include those below, if not the dates will just be date received.

Basketball Team Lots For Trade Or Sale

I mentioned about a month ago that I had acquired a collection of mostly early 1990s Basketball cards. They range from roughly 1992-1995 with most being 1994-1995. I finally got them sorted into teams and took a card count. I Would prefer to trade these as team lots for Bullets/Wizards lots, but am also willing to sell them as team lots. $5.00 for teams with 50+ cards and $2.50 for teams under 50 cards. There are some duplicates. Some teams have a star or two from those years some don't. I am sealing them into team bags or plastic card cases/boxes so I can't look for any specific players. Contact me with any/all offers.

Utah Jazz: 42

Multi-Team, Checklists, and Undrafted: 28

TRADING INFO:
Email trade offers to klandersen at Yahoo dot com.

As I said I would like to trade these teams for Bullets/Wizards, Squires. If you don't have those then my teams from the other sports are Nationals/Senators, Orioles, Redskins, Rams, Capitals, Some Ravens, and Pre-1980 vintage. I am mostly concentrating on the baseball right now. You can checkout What I collect, and to see what I already have cataloged and don't need see my Zistle page, plus my master want list has some of what I am still (or always) looking for. I am trying to get all my lists updated, but there is still a very very long way to go. I also do some Non-Sports, mostly sci-fi and the pre 1,000s of inserts and sub-sets (Pre-late 1990s) years. I am most picky about the Non-Sport. I tend to be more whatever attracts my eye with Non-Sport.

For sales just contact me via email and make an offer to start negotiating.
