Project Purge: Football (NFL) Team Lots

PROJECT PURGE:
Are You Ready For Some Football?
Football (NFL) Team Lots
Published: 17 FEB 2024 Updated: 04  MAR 2024
Marx Brothers from "Horse Feathers" football scene from internet.

I am currently in the early stages of a huge collection purge or partial purge at least. I kicked things off on 16 Jan (2024) with a post for some Basketball Team Lots that I had prepared and put into a monster box. I put a post up at TCDB.com and then was going to post the offer up here on my blog near the end of the month, however, the response was so intense I rushed to make an updated blog post. Most of the claims came from the database no surprise there. I was a bit surprised that team sets of mostly 1990s base cards with doubles and multiples would be claimed so fast. A little more than a day and a half after the original posting time and ALL the lots were claimed. A TCDB member claimed the last 5 teams and some of the random type card lots. Needless to say his was the biggest package BOX I had to send out. About the size of a USPS med sized flat rate box.

As I did with the Basketball lots I am only shipping to USA addresses. Sorry international postage is just too expensive and there is no practicle package tracking systems.

It is time for some Football. Like the Basketball lots they are mostly base cards and some inserts. For the Basketball I didn't specify the cards were almost exclusively just common base (some of the teams have an insert or two but no "hits"), By saying most of the cards were 1990s (the "Junk Wax") years I was sort of implying the lots were all common base cards. I'm sorry if some people thought there might be more precious gems in the lots.

I had been in a Football team traders group for a long time. To get trade fodder for the group I ripped open some packs and boxes of newer product and often purchased team lots from Ebay. These Football lots may contain some autos or relic cards. No guarantees though as most teams will have neither. The year ranges are also a little larger than the 1989 to 2007 range the Basketball lots had. Some of these team lots go up to 2019 or 2020, with many teams, but not all, including 2014-2017 cards.

Not all teams in the league will be available at this time. I will try to ship things out in a timely manner but with the lessons learned from the Basketball Lots I will not try rushing everything all at once. Some people will have to wait for a little while. I also plan on shipping most lots in the small flat rate boxes. I had tried avoiding those but many of the basketball lot packages ended up costing over $10 to ship (I had only asked $6 for shipping costs) and small flat rate boxes ship for around $10.50 now.

Some team lots will include an auto card or relic card but there is no guarantee of getting either. Most team lots will just contain common base cards with maybe some inserts, but no "hits".

Most cards will be in EX condition, but not all. Spome cards may have creases and maybe some dings or ware on the corners or edges. Not as badly as many vintage cards but they still maybe noticable.

Shipping for team lots will be $11 per lot. You can request more than one team but be advised that shipping might be delayed as I search for a larger box to ship. Teams with fewer cards I might be able to ship for cheaper but that isn't guaranteed, and if requesting multiple teams it will most likely be $11 to ship anyway.

Collectible Card Club

 Where oh where to begin?

Many card collectors maybe aware of Collectible Card Club a subscription box service. As a member each month they will send you a box of unopened packs of cards. They have the 4 major US sports: Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Hockey plus Soccer and Gaming. They offer a selection of 3 membership tiers: Silver 5 packs $24.95, Gold 10 packs $42.95, Platinum 15 packs $60.95. You can choose which individual sport flavor you want or a 3 sport Baseball, Football & Basketball box. Plus you choose from Vintage (1999 on back to probably early 1980s. I think they have stated 1983 is as far back as they have gone), or Modern (2000 and up), or a mix of the two.

Now here is where things get interesting. Almost 3 years ago, back in Sept 2019 I received a box from The CCC. I did not order the box it was sent to me as a sort of promo for bloggers I think. I don't recall if I received an email or responded to some promo they were having but anyway I currently have a box sitting unopened still in it's yellow/orange mailing package. I had planed on doing a spectacular blog post about opening it that was to include a video busting the box and the subsequent packs inside, including scans of everything during the process. I nixed that idea due to all the time it would take to work on it.

Flashforward to recent months as I have seen more and more UTube videos and blog posts of others busting these boxes and repack products like Repacked Wax and well I got the bug for it. So I set up a Platinum Vintage Baseball sub and a Gold Vintage Football sub. This way it is less likely I will get brands that I don't particularly like such as Chrome, & Draft editions. There may be a few as those trends started in the 1990s. Anyway for brands I don't like I will put those packs aside as traders or toss them up on Ebay maybe.

My first two subscription boxes arrived Friday 10 June. So now I am a Collectible Card Club Card Carrying Member even though I probably shouldn't spend so much on it..

I was going to include one of my first CCC Box Breaks for this post but I haven't started opening them yet. I have 3 to do sometime soon.

Washington Wednesday: RIP Redskins HTTR

WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY:
RIP Redskins: HTTR4LIFE
Redskins Super Fan Chief Zee crying (date unknown)

Well they went ahead and did it. The NFL's Washington Team The REDSKINS gave into the pressure to change their controversial Nickname. I won't go into all the history of the name and the periodic attempts from outside entities to force the team to change the name they have held for 87 years. all that can be found on the interwebs. Along with all the Pros and Cons. Sure some people are now not offended but now a different group of people have been offended and some angered.

I will say that I am far from happy about the whole thing. I've been a life-long fan of the team, growing up with an older brother who was a super true blue fan, even my father who wasn't much of a sports fan enjoyed watching the occasional Redskins game on the telly and kept track of them during the season from time to time (mostly I think to please his fan family). What ticks me off the most is it appears to be that the owners were being blackmailed by FedEx one of their biggest financial supporters, investors and others. The delivery service sent a letter saying basically "Change the name or move to another stadium", they have about 7 more years on the stadium's lease so that isn't really one of the pressing issues. Also several big named merchandise retailers such as Amazon, Target and Walmart to name a few have pulled all Redskins merchandise from their shelves and have stopped selling them.

A couple of weeks after announcing that the name was going to be changed and the old name dropped the team now has a temporary name for the 2020 season "The Washington Football Team". They will keep the maroon and gold colors, but will be logoless. The helmets will be plain maroon with large gold numbers on the sides. Apparently they will have a permanent as yet unannounced new name and logo starting in the 2021 season.

I guess to a non-fan the best analogy would be if the high school you and your siblings graduated from, maybe even one of your parents and their siblings graduated from as well, was forced to change their mascot's name and/or even the entire school name. That is how it has affected me. After several generations of history.  It just "always was the way it was". It is part of the fandom intangibles. You don't know exactly what it is unless you have it. Even then it seems to be different for every fan.

As a fan of the old team I am not in the mood to attempt to become a fan of whatever the new team will be. Collecting cards for this year/season will be bittersweet. I'm not sure what I will do for next season. Do I stay with the team trading group I am a part of once the new team is established and cards baring the new team name and logo are made? A big part of me doesn't want to.

OK rant over for now here are some historic DC Football cards that are sure to offend some people.

Lets start with one of my fave QBs of ALL-TIME Sonny Jurgensen. This one is from 1991 a special Quarterbacks set. I chose to show it because of it's original old school looks, especially the back pic with the original arrow helmet design (not the 1990s retro version)

1991 Quarterback Legends: 24 Sonny Jurgensen Washington Redskins

These next two cards I picked to show are of the same Player Jim Lachey. Both are very cool photos the first is a portrait from the 1991 Pro Set Football set,

1991 Pro Set Football: 381 Jim Lachey Washington Redskins

Next Card. Check out the cool up close and personal pic. I picked this card to show because of the peeling of the stripe stickers on his helmet. Thought it was very cool looking.

1991 Upper Deck Football - 102 Jim Lachey Washington Redskins

This next card I chose because of the retro looks with the airbrushing/photoshopping (or maybe it is just unbranded spring training gear). It is also close to what the "temporary" helmets of this 2020 season will look like, with the exception that the new temporary helmets will have the player's uniform number in gold on the sides.

2004 Score Football: 330 James Thrash Washington Redskins

The final card I'm showing is one of the cool retro cards from 2004 Fleer Tradition Football set. Not only is the card design retro but this was the year the Redskins were sporting an anniversary retro uniform with the Arrow Helmet and a retro looking jersey and their return to the mustard colored pants.

2004 Fleer Tradition Football: 196 LaVar Arrington Washington Redskins

*UGH Due to the recent formatting updating changes that Blogger did, on my ancient computer at home I can no longer edit posts on blogger. It just gave me a blank page, well it had part of the editing "frame" of the page but the part where content was supposed to be it was blank. An incomplete page. I think it is because of something with my outdated Chrome browser. I didn't think about checking with Firefox (or Internet Explorer) until after I had shutdown my ancient Windows XP laptop/notebook. I'll try seeing if my ancient Firefox or IE works sometime later. Probably not because I think they had problems ages ago preventing me from using them then. So I won't be able to directly upload from my laptop to Blogger. I will have to use other sites or do what I did this time and transfer the images to a thumb drive and do it old school. Not to mention I will have to use my work laptop to do all the post editing, not just some of the last minute corrections before the scheduled Noontime posting. Yeah Yeah Yeah I need to get a new up-to-date home 'puter/laptop.

Bye Bye Mail-day Tracking Bye Bye Bye

OK so this post story will probably be two-fold. The main subject will be mail days tracking. I guess I'll start with what I used to do up until a little over a year ago. I think I have described the process in detail before so I'll try not to get too deep into this time. Basically until around mid January of last year (2019) I used to keep pretty detailed records of what cards I got in the mail, from where how much I paid for them etc. Since last January I haven't updated any posts or files, but still stupidly have been keeping all the packages and envelopes separate in their piles and marking the outer envelope with the receiving date, but often not keeping track of prices especially the shipping costs. So I have a few boxes of padded envelopes and PWEs with assorted cards that I know exactly when I got them but may or may not have what I paid for them. Sometimes Sportlots sellers include all the details, but often if they do include a packing slip the shipping fees are not listed. Sometimes they don't include anything so there is not even the record of what I paid for the lot or the singles or what have me. At one time I thought about trying to catch up and have a word file with some stuff that came in early 2019 but it is far from complete I think there are 3 or 4 padded envelopes left from January 2019 and some of the other months I have some packages listed here and some PWEs there. So That stuff came to a screeching halt sometime around this January. Except I have still been marking the envelopes with date received.

I used to keep track of all that stuff in two places first on the community site Trading Card Central (TCC) that was my main "storage" area for my mail day posts. I would then cut & paste my TCC post onto Trading Card Zone (TCZ) which a few years back changed it's name to Sports Card University. Sometimes the TCZ version I would tweak some to cater to that forum's platform. Usually I would draft my posts as a MicroSoft Word file or just a plain Windows Notepad file. Sometimes I would save the original file sometimes not. Well now long story short TCC seems to have finally bought the farm and bit the bullet, and formerly TCZ merged with another site to become Sports Card Club. The TCC site seems to be totally dead now (since around early Mar) and Sports Card Club is currently blocked by my work network and I haven't bothered trying to connect when at home.

So yeah I no longer keep detailed records of what I have gotten, when, or from where, or for how much. I can look at my buying history on COMC and Sporlots and Ebay (to some extent) but I'm not going to bother any more. Trying to do my previous card inventory logging delays the organizing and cataloging of my collection too much. So those days of being super detailed (or anal retentive) are over. I still have some records and I have my Check Out My Cards records that I have been meaning to make some "MailDazed From The Pazt" posts with those. I'm stalled on finding the dang Football cards from my very first order that were mostly from the 2009 Donruss Classics football cards. Maybe sometime I'll get around to that and scanning all the cards from my various orders there.

Well that is all that I will talk about that for now lets look at some cards:

OK so I'll show two cards that it turns out I got from a Sportlots order that I received on 19 Jul 2019. Two 2019 Panini Score Football cards both parallels, both Rams. First one is card 296 Todd Gurley Red parallel and the other is card 299 Brandin Cooks Gold parallel. Neither is a serial numbered card. I only know that information from the little paper slip I put in the penny sleeve that one of the cards was in. Part of my old system that sort of ended last year, except I have still marked the envelopes with the date I received things. I could look in my Sportlots buying history to find out about the order but I'm not going to bother.

2019 Panini: Score Football: 299 Gold Brandin Cooks Los Angeles Rams

2019 Panini: Score Football: 296 Red Todd Gurley II Los Angeles Rams

I really like the design of the 2019 Score Football. Especially the helmet in the corner. I wish the backs had more complete stats and didn't repeat the front photo. I'd rather have all stats like in the 1960s and 70s Topps monopoly days. I probably have the normal base versions of these cards from my Sports Card Forum (SCF) team trades but I'm not sure. I should also get the Red Cooks and the Gold Gurley to have those rainbows. Oh well a collectors life is never done, or his collection never complete or dead or something.

Losing Interest A Little Bit

Lately I have been losing interest in collecting a little. As the end of February was approaching I was even losing a little interest in blogging a bit. Of course some of this was my renewed efforts to get back into selling on Ebay. This month I have concentrated on my Ebay. As a result of making an effort to list new items and actually get them up on Ebay I went from having 6 stale listings and a last sale about 3 or 4 months ago for a 3 inch button that sold for $1.50 with Free Shipping to 30 listings. Over the last few weeks I have sold 5 items from 4 listings. I sold 2 books, and 16 packs of Football Cards (11 packs of 2016 Leaf Draft Football and 5 packs of 2018 Leaf Draft Football) I didn't know those things were so popular. Personally I don't like the Draft cards since they are undrafted players in college uniforms. Eventually some of those guys go on to have professional careers but many don't.

To reflect my Ebay sales I have tried to update my trading posts on this blog. I think they are current now. Anyway it is almost midnight on 29 February and I need to get this posted to make the deadline. For the full details (or at least what I could recall) check out my post over at my regular Blog "Kirk's Knook": Back To The Swing of Ebay Selling

CK42 Trade Post: It's Baaaaaaaaaack

 CK42 TRADE POST:
It's Baaaaaaaaaack
30 Sep 2018
Trade Info Master Want ListTrade ListWhat I Collect

OK so this series has never really left in the first place. I just needed some catchy post title. I'm not sure what all will be included in this post, so read on to see what ended up on it.

New Offerings:
Yeah that says what it means.

First up two 6 packs  ALL 11 packs SOLD on Ebay $1 per pack of 2018 Leaf Draft Football 5 cards per pack. These Draft sets are usually of the current NFL draft class players shown in their college uniforms with some stats info but are usually printed up before the actual draft so they never have the NFL team that drafted the players on the cards if the player was even drafted. That is one of the reasons I don't like the brand I have never been a prospector. Unfortunately for me these packs are usually included in those Fairfield repack boxes that I like to get at Target.

Next another pair of 2 packs 1990 Collegiate Collection: Notre Dame Football 1st Edition Football  8 cards per pack. This set has some NFL greats as seen in their college days with the Fightin' Irish. For sale $2 per pack Up On Ebay. Both packs sold on Ebay after I dropped the price to $1.50

Previous Offerings:
Previous posts/offers are listed here.

CK42 Trading Posts:
Walking Dead and Hoops: Walking Dead Cards and 2015-16 Complete Basketball cards.
A Lot of Oilers: A 50-some card lot of Houston Oilers cards.
Previously Trading Thursday: A couple of pack lots. One 6 packs one 9 packs.

Trading Thursday Posts:
A Set and Singles: 1993-94 Classic Draft Basketball
The Return?: 2015-16 Donruss Basketball from pack pulls
This One is on Eleven: Basketball, Football and Non-Sport tall boy sized
A Fifth of February: Mixed bag of Baseball, Basketball and Football
Experiment Number One: 3 cards total 2 hockey relics, 1 baseball auto
CFL Trading: 2015 CFL Football cards from a single box break

The cards listed in this series of posts are for trade or sale. If I don't mention a price feel free to give a reasonable offer. In some cases I might just feel like giving the cards away to a good home that will appreciate them. Not that I don't appreciate them, but the cards I list no longer fit into the scope of my collection. I don't "trash" cards anymore. It makes me cringe when I hear people talking about throwing trading cards into the garbage. If I can't find a home for cards I no longer want, I will have to toss them into the recycle bin. I can't have them cluttering up my trading card hoard.

CK42 Trade Post: Previously Trading Thursday

 CK42 TRADE POST:
31 May 2017 (Updated 31 Jan 2021)
Previously Trading Thursday

This series of posts was previously titled "Trading Thursday" from now on I'll post on whatever day I choose and call it "CK42 Trade Post", or maybe no special title. It doesn't have the silly alliteration I like to use for series post titles but what the heck. My Blog My Rules!

As with the previous Trading Thursday posts, these posts make up my "to trade" list without the hassle of a huge list that takes a long time to load, read etc. My main goal is to get them out of my card hoard by any means possible by trade, sale or just give-away. I'd prefer one of the first two options, but whatever.

I might just end up making updates to the trade list page I am in the process of creating (initially to track these posts) and do away with regular trading posts.

On the other hand I need to get better organized before I can get serious about trading specific cards.

New Offerings:
Yeah that says what it means.

6 1 unopened packs of 2016 Leaf Draft Football. 5 cards per pack. These cards show the players in their college uniforms. Unfortunately they don't indicate if the team the players were drafted by. A quick Internet search of the player can determine that, but it can get tedious. One of the reasons I'm not thrilled with Prospect and Draft cards of any sport. Sometimes the players never make the pros.

I've sold ALL 6 of these packs on Ebay @ $1.00/pack.

More unopened packs. This is a slightly larger lot of 9 packs of 2016 Leaf Babe Ruth Collection Baseball - 5 cards per pack. These are some nice vintage looking type cards. Unfortunately these cool cards suffer from the modern unlicensed product disease of missing team logos and team names. But most people know The Babe was mostly a Yankee, OK he started as a Red Sox but spent most of his career in those recognizable Nu Yawk pin-stripes.

Sold All 9 packs Up On Ebay at $1.50/pack

Washington Wednesday: 1971 Ted Vactor Redskins

1971 Redskins Rookie Card 159 Ted Vactor

Quite awhile ago in the Blog Bat Around post I did, I was going to tell the tale of this card. However it no longer fit the criteria of a card I used to own since I have a copy that was acquired a few years back. I might even now have two copies, not 100% sure about that fact.

My story is from circa 1975 maybe '76 but '75 seems more likely. I was over at the house of a childhood friend who was a year older than me and lived just a few houses away. I think I might have done a little trading with him also that day I don't recall. The main event, the trade I regret (regretted for several years until I got a replacement) was with another boy. Before I mention the kid I traded with I'll talk about the trade.

It was an All Topps (remember this was mid-1970s there was little else around but Topps) football cards All Redskins trade and/or Ex-Redskins. Something like a five to one trade. To some collectors I may have gotten the better end of the trade since I got more cards, higher profile players and they all were roughly the same vintage but I didn't feel like it. It took some persuading for me to even make the trade. I remember some begging and pleading maybe some crocodile tears and the ante being raised by the addition of another card or two just for this one card. I think only 2 or 3 cards were in the mix to begin. In total I got 5 cards (I think) to the one card I traded, and at the time thought I would never see again. Remember this was the 1970s before the early 1980s Trading Card Boom and subsequent overproduced "junk" years. This was a few short years before my LCS would start from literally a "hole in the wall" (back corner room), and the Internet wasn't even a concept yet. It would be another 5 years or so before personal computers would become a reality.

I don't recall all 5 cards specifically but I do recall the first two:

1973 Norm Snead
(OK so he was Giants at the time. Notice he is playing the Skins on this card)
1974 Bill Brundige
 and John Wilbur
maybe Ken Houston?

Maybe also a current 1975 Redskin. I think it was in '75 but as I said it could have been '76. I don't recall the exact count but I'm fairly sure the Snead and Brundige were in the bunch The Snead was my first 1973 Topps Football card, or one of my first. It might have even been one of the "bonus" incentives to make the trade. Anyway I got a small poker hand of cards for just one card. This one:

1971 Topps Football 159 Ted Vactor RC Redskins
(front and back)

Yep The Rookie card and only card that Ted Vactor appeared on during his playing days, and probably even at all. It still appears to be his ONLY card. Oh and the kid I traded with? Ted's son Tori Vactor. Tori was super collecting as many copies of his father's card as possible. During the 1970s that would be quite an accomplishment. I don't think the term "Super Collecting" was around back then. Maybe it would have been called "Hoarding".  At the time of the trade I think he had 2 or 3 copies already.

The Vactors lived across the street from our elementary school. During outside recess Tori was one of four kids who were the "Fantastic Four" the best athletes of the class who would take on everyone else in all the different sports and cream us. I didn't hang around with Tori so I didn't meet or even schmooze with his NFL Dad. I was at the house once I think and even then just at the front door with another friend to see if Tori was available to play football or some other sport/game with a group of friends. It was on a weekend or during the summer vacation maybe. I recall he was sick, or he had to babysit his little brother who was sick. We were in the same elementary school class for a few years and attended the same Jr. High, he went to a different high school. He played football in high school but I'm not sure if he played in college or even went to college.

Sometimes I wonder how many of his dad's card he eventually collected? Has he kept them since? Or his brother?

Trading Thursday: This One Is On Eleven

 TRADING THURSDAY:
18 Feb 2016

I originally intended to post this on last Thursday the 11th. Like usual I got lazy and there is no big demand on this type of post so it doesn't matter when I post it if ever. OK so this Trading Thursday Post is actually the 5th one if my recollection and count is correct. Even though the first one wasn't technically a TT in name yet. OK so most of my stuff has been junk years stuff or from the last few years and unfortunately seem to be very boring to all. *loud heavy sigh*

3 Cards Including A Dupe In A Bat Envelope

I'm not sure what is more exciting about this particular PWE I received the cards or the stamp that was used. OK the cards are what really excited me and the stamp was just an added bonus.

On a typical day last month (January 2016) I got two PWEs in the mail. One PWE had a card I bought from Ebay that I will talk about some other post and the other had 3 cards I got from Sportlots. All 3 cards were from an auction with a .25¢ opening bid plus .99¢ shipping (combined somewhat).

1968 Topps Football: 2 cards both cards a bit offcenter borderline miscut.
106 Ed Meador Rams coin rub cartoon on back totally blank must have been a dud.

(Front and Back)

107 Fred Cox Vikings back cartoon is regular printed one.

(Front and Back)

1963 Topps Baseball:
69 Bud Zipfel Senators. When I bid on this one unfortunately I didn't realize I already had it. Fortunately this one is in better condition than the one I had. So it is an upgrade.

Oh a cool thing about the PWE is the stamp was a Batman Forever stamp.

In the long run I'm not sure if I will actually keep the stamp.

Trading Thursday: A Fifth Of February

 TRADING THURSDAY:
04 Feb 2016
UPDATED: 26 Sep 2018

Oops I goofed on the title for this week. I was thinking Thursday was the fifth for some reason. It is only the fourth.

OK so my followers count is now back up to 100. Yay and all that. Regarding trading I do admit I still owe a few people some packages from either an outstanding trade agreement from way back or contest winnings lot or what-have-you. It nags at me from time to time and the nagging is getting more intense. For the most part I know who I owe but there are a few I need to double check what it is I need to send. If you think I owe you some cards contact me and remind me what I am supposed to be sending your way.

This Week's Offerings:
Yeah that says what it means.

I am just going to list a whole bunch of cards right now. I won't post individual scans as my original concept of this series of posts was to be. Over time it would be too much of a chore and I would be limited to how many cards I could mention in a post. I can scan on request if needed.

CFL Trading

If you follow this blog you remember that I fairly recently broke a box of 2015 Upper Deck CFL Football (Part 1, Part 2)

I am keeping the 3 Brandon Banks cards and the 9 Retro OPC cards. Plus one wrapper. I have traded the high-number cards away for some Redskins. The high-numbers included Defensive players, All-Stars and Star Rookies. The cards numbered over #100. The rest are for trade in team lots. Oh and I also have as noted from the break 13 miscut cards. The two copies of the checklist card #100 will go with the two teams of the players that are shown on the front (Tiger-Cats and Stampeders). Trades will be one-for-one. I am open to selling by team for $5/team. If anyone wants the box or wrappers I could give (freebie no trade necessary) those to whoever wants them.

Protrait/Vertical: 120
Landscape/Horizontal: 14
5 All Stars: Average 6 per box
7 Star Rookies: Average 6 per box
10 Duplicates

Inserts:
9 O-Pee-Chee Retro inserts: Average 8 per box.
1 Grey Cup Moments
1 “Hit" Game Jersey: Average is 2 per box but not guaranteed

13 Miscut cards - That is way too many. They fell mostly in the second half of the box 8 in 4 consecutive packs and then later 5 more in 2 consecutive packs.
