Warehouse 13 Myka Sketch Card

One of my favorite TV shows will come to an end later this spring shortly after returning to the Sci-Fi channel (spelled with two "y"s and no "c") for a 5th and final season of only Six episodes. Warehouse 13 a well written adventure series often with witty tongue in cheek humor reminds many of the late 1980s show Friday The 13th: The Series (in recent years renamed "Friday's Curse" to avoid confusion with the horror movies of the same name). One of the characters on Warehouse 13 Myka Bering played by Canadian actress Joanne Kelly fast became one of my faves on the show. So...

Back in November of last year (Thursday 21 November, 2013 to be exact) I had a two card mailday. As many might know by now I keep track of my maildays on my TCC blog. I got this card by sniping on Ebay, in this case I really really wanted the card. I started watching it, and was nervous about it because it was getting some bids and creeping toward my comfortable maximum bid (as is the case with many sketch cards that often "start" at too high a price for me to even consider bidding). About a day or two before the end of the auction it had 6 bids and was at $15.50 many more bids and it would be out of my comfort zone. The Final night I watched it periodically for updates and in the last few minutes kept checking it and refreshing my browser then when it was down into the final minute I bid my max of $35 and for about 40 seconds I was worried another sniper would come by, the ones that use the sniping software and don't have to watch the auction at all because their program bids at the last second or two. Fortunately for me I had the winning bid. The 7th bid at $21.50. I thought the shipping had been set to $3.50 but it showed up as Free Shipping in "My Ebay". I was really glad I won the auction for this beautiful sketch of a beautiful woman.

The Artist Javier Gonzalez of Blackhilt Studios I think was also the seller under the Ebay handle Blackhilt Studios. The card was listed as an ACEO (Art Cards Editions and Originals) sketch card.

Booty From A Baseball Group Break In The Zone

Back in January of this year (2014) I got my Booty from a Baseball Group Box Break over at TCZ. My chosen team was the Nationals. I used to have the Orioles in the group as well, but finances (mostly frequent major car repairs) have made taking two teams in groups difficult. This was one of those breaks were unfortunately I didn't get much from my own team. The only card I did get was a two player card, both players prospects fortunately the other team was unclaimed. I'm not a big fan of prospect cards, many of the guys never make it to the bigs. The rest of the cards I got were random base from unclaimed teams and a randomized hit. I think that card almost makes up for the lack of my homie team. It is from one of my PC 1970s childhood HOF guys.

Add To The 1993 Ted Williams Set: Johnny Mize

One of the many sets I am trying to finish that will probably never be finished since I have so many of them to complete is the 1993 Ted Williams Baseball set and some of it's sub-sets/inserts. On 13 January 2014 (hey a month ago, see some of my posts can be fairly recent and dust-free) I got a couple of cards from two separate sportlots auctions from a seller in Canada for the opening bid of 25¢. One of those cards is the one I'm showing right now, the other I think will be a "Card of the Whenever". So for the shipping of two sportlots cards of $3.14. So here is the nice Hall of Famer from the 1993 Ted Williams Baseball set.

I either have to adjust some settings on my scanner (yeah like that is gonna happen) or get a new scanner (ditto) some of my recent scans have had these wavy lines which are more noticeable when the images are enlarged. A Berra Full of Yogis

For as long as I can remember Yogi Berra has been an icon of Major League Baseball. He is one of the classic vintage players that I keep a lookout for to find a deal on his cards. Most of the cards issued during his playing years and somewhat his managing years are bloody expensive. Anyway I thought it would be fun to show some of his cards that I have. So I will just show some of them mostly because I don't have all of them scanned (and I noticed one of these I didn't have the back scanned silly me)

First here is a card from when he turned coat from New York Yankee to New York Met. It is his 1965 Topps card. This is also a fortunate but sneaky way to mention my "Strive for '65" Goal to have that entire set by April of 2015. I got it from Ebay for a steal back in 2012 for $7.95 + $2.25 shipping. (here is my mention of the card on the TCC forum Steals board. The thread lies because it has been scanned since then).

Now one of those modern retro cards from 2009 Goodwin Champions made by Upper Deck. I have two of these I think one I had bought and the other I either pulled from a pack or traded for it. I think at one time I might have had 3 of these. Anyway I was lazy a few years back when I scanned it. I had scanned it in the toploader and never got around to scanning the back so the back image appears "Courtesy of COMC.com"

Ooh this next one is pretty darn cool. I got this one back in the day from the original source of how you normally got them. It is a food product card. It is card number one from a five card gimmick "pop-up"card set of Hall of Fame players. The idea was to pull the tab on the top up and the card "pops" open. I never to my best recollection "popped" mine. I took it out of the original plastic wrapping. Maybe a bad move there. To think at one time in the late 90s I was tempted to sell it, but NOT NOW. I plan on keeping it I was insane then and didn't remember who was on the card. The number is on the front "1 of 5" but it is not a serial number 1 of 5. I want to get the other four cards some time (hmm I noticed a full set on the bay I started watching it). In 1995 Stouffer's food included these "Legends of Baseball" cards in some of their frozen dinner products. Hmmm back in '95 they might have still made "TV Dinners" for standard ovens with the aluminum foil with special instructions on if you wanted to microwave the meal. I forget exactly what product it came in. Was it meat loaf, or turkey w/ gravy?

WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY: Wes Unseld Hall Monitor

In early January of this year 2014. I bought this sweet shiny card from a fellow member form the TCC forums for just $5 delivered. A Wes Unseld Bullets card number 22 It is from the 2013 Panini Prizm Basketball set The "Hall Monitors" 25 card Hall of Fame Sub-Set. I might try for a partial rainbow of Wes Unseld but with two 1/1 "black parallels" (Black Prizm and Black Prizm Mosaic) a full rainbow is next to impossible. There are enough of the other colors to make even a partial rainbow hard. I might try to get the base cards (and maybe some parallel colors) of a few of the other players: Moses Malone, Earl Monroe. Not sure if I'll try for a full base set of this sub-set.

Card of the Whenever: Willard Sherman Rams 1956 Topps Football

Here is another installment of my "Card of the Whenever" posts. Since doing a "Card of the Day" or a "Card of the Week" or any other regular schedule doesn't work for me I came up with the "CotW". I haven't been keeping track of these but this is the second one so far and the second vintage card from the 50s. The last one was baseball and the first of the series this one is football.

Wow look at that miscutting. The back is missing the bottom copyright info which you can start to make out the copyright info from the next card at the top. Back then the copyright lines didn't have a year just the TCG (if they were made by Topps), so with this card if you didn't recognize the design as being from 1956 you wouldn't know exactly which year it came from. From the info on the back with "Topps Football" around the card number you could tell it was made by Topps, and by mentioning 1955 you would know that it had to be at the earliest late 1955 seasoned collectors would just assume 1956 since '55 was the last year mentioned (and if they researched the "year" stats it would turn out to be for 1955). Wow his career high of 11 interceptions was the '55 season.

I don't recall when or where I got this card, probably from an auction at sportlots.

Here is a card I scanned ages ago and I don't think I ever mentioned it anywhere, maybe I mentioned it or showed it on a forum but I don't think so, at least not the full on front/back combo. It is a pretty cool design and one of those sneaky on-sticker autos disguised as an on-card auto due to the card design. I think I got it from a group box break, but I might have bought it for $5-$10 bucks I don't recall, and frankly it doesn't matter that much.

Strive For 65 Set Build

Note: As I build this set I will update this post. I have now 413/598 69.1% (415/600 69.2%)

I don't usually set to many goals, and usually not very lofty ones at that. I don't do New Year's Resolutions either. I also don't like to mention my age much but... well next year 2015 will be the 50th Anniversary of the 1965 Topps Baseball set. One of my favorite sets of all-time.

And OH, it also happens to be my birth year. So yeah next year in April I will turn the BIG Five-0. Not really looking forward to that. I had the sudden realization that it would be very very cool to finally complete the flagship set for my birth year by My 50th and the 50th anniversary of said yadda yadda.

 This "card" of me is not a real card.

It is just a digital mock-up I photoshopped,

well MSPaint(ed) (or MS Photo Editor or both) a few years ago.

I used the Jim Hannan card as a key.

So maybe the blogiverse can help me out here by sending me some '65 Mojo preferably by trade or gift or some small $$ sales. Some of those big named Yankees and Dodgers and various other stars will probably be stumbling blocks. I hope not this is a very special achievement.

Believe it or not I've had this '65 Ernie Banks for as long as I can remember, actually I think it was originally my brother's and I traded something for it (a 1970 Fergie Jenkins or 1958 Willie Mays maybe?) Still one of my all-time fave cards in my collection.

Of course I would like to get them in as best condition as possible but I will accept the sort of poor conditioned ones to. One of the big criteria is the backs need to be relatively clean and all the info readable. They can have some off-centering but not too drastic and not any miscuts (unless an upgraded copy is with the said miscut). Checklist cards I'd prefer to be unmarked but will accept ones that are marked a bit. I just hope they aren't the super messed up ones. LOL. Even with some of the duds if I at least get one of each card in the set (even some very poor old beat up ones that went through the mud bath with the bike spokes it was attached to) my goal will have been met. Then I can upgrade later, but of course I would prefer not to have to do much upgrading.

Out of the 598 (well 600 with 2 checklist variants) cards in the set I only have a measly little 94. Not quite a sixth or a fifth even, I might need one of those soon. I have a LONG way to go.

Card #21 Don Blasingame Senators - the copy I got (long story short) was in worse condition than the sportlots seller had originally stated they refunded me the .18¢ for it and sent it anyway the problem is the back has some paper glued to it (the opposite of paper loss). You can read some of the stuff but not all of it, and removing the extra paper and glue residue if even possible would ruin the card further than it is. So I need an Upgrade which is why it is still on the list and blue. I picked up a copy of this one at my LCS for $2 it is way off center almost a misscut. The front is off-center down and to the right. The back way off-center to the bottom, on the bottom the last of the white box is on the very edge of the card a hair's-width of blue is at the bottom in places.

Hmmm apparently there is a slight variation with card #508 7th Series Checklist Cards 507-598. There is an ever so slight font size variation a Large and a small. Not sure if I'm going to try for this variation or not. I am currently watching an Ebay listing that is selling the pair for about $20.

In the last month or two I got about a dozen new cards for the set, a few from some auctions I think, a couple from another blogger sent in a PWE with that three pocket (cut from a 9 pocket sheet) filled with cards about 3 to 4 cards per pocket whatever comfortably fits, and some (including a dupe plus one graded) from a sale from a member on the SCF forum.
04 Aug 2014: Got 17 cards for this set from a Secret Santa in July package on Friday 01 Aug 2014. The cards fill up my first complete page, and had the final World Series card I needed for that subset.
18 May 2014: This past week I got about a dozen cards in including the Checklist variations I needed so now I have a full checklist sub-set. So actually the total number is 600 cards not just 598 or 599

Some months back {looking in email history and saved text messages*} I had gotten an email from someone with an offer to sell me a card. I'll call him "Bob" to protect the guys identity and spare some of the embarrassment. In addition I couldn't remember his name until I located my communications with him. 

Out of the blue I get this email from "Bob":

"My grandfather left me certain baseball and football cards including a Sonny Jurgensen from the 1969 season. His # was 6 and was QB for the redskins. He was the leading passer in the NFL in 1969. The card is probably 1970 T.C.G. It also has an autograph on it but I doubt that its real. Would you like to purchase it? I can take pictures of it with my phone and send it to yours to prove that it's real or I can sell it to someone else. Its up to you."

OK he got my interest, one of my all-time fave players and a vintage card probably signed in person sometime within the last 40 years. I let his comment about Sonny being number six slip. Probably should have torn him a new one for that, but I'm a nice guy. Actually it turns out #6 was the card number, good thing I didn't go all Chuck Norris on the guy. OK so I had to find out what this was all about.

I replied:

"Yes I am interested in it and yes I would like to see pics of it first."

Bob:

"Took the pics just need a number to send them to

My number is  xxx-xxx-xxxx"

He sent a blank Message asking for me to send him my cell number.

I don't normally do text stuff like I said but I replied:

"My cell number is xxx-xxx-xxxx"

Bob replies:

"Hope u got the two pics. As u can tell they're in good condition and the real deal so whats ur offer cause I'm dealing with several people on this card"

The rest of this conversation took place with text messages.

"Bob" said:
"Good right?"
and
"What do u think?"

'Bob' sent a couple of pics of the card (I cropped them here a little).

Cell phone picks of the card, I got a kick out the back "dining room table w/Mom walking in" shot. That at least is what it looks like. Also looks like there is one of those weird white-fade-out dots on the back or it's paper loss. The black spot on the bottom I think is the shadow of his thumb.

Seeing these pics I said:
"Yes very cool. It is a 1970 Topps "Super" or Giant"
At the time I couldn't remember if Topps called them Super or Giant they call them Super.

So he says: "I know and there's only 35... Its in great shape so what do u think?"

My comeback that goes for the jugular.
"I have one already in just as good shape as that one. I have to burst your bubble there were way more than 35 made, and the "autograph" is one of those facsimile autographs. Its worth about $5-$10."

He concludes the conversation with a simple "Ok. Later"

So yeah the guy thought that this card: was more special than it was. He thought it was number 6 of only 35 special Sonny Jurgensen cards, or he was playing me for the uninformed super fan who didn't know his card history.

*For the record I rarely text message. I receive text Messages from the Nationals for the game updates and I have entered the occasional contest via text like when NBC had that game show "Deal Or No Deal" and had a win from home thing where you picked a case (out of 4 they showed on the screen) and then text in the number with your guess and if you picked the right number you had a chance to be picked randomly from the right guesses. Oh and when I'm waiting for a tow truck I let AAA text the 4 digit call number for my situation.
